The Emergence of Scar Care: Beauty’s Next Major Category

We’re taught that time heals all wounds, but scars are forever. Over the last few decades, the skincare industry has primarily focused on developing treatments that help heal acne scars, but scars can happen anywhere on the body and for almost any reason. Infection, surgery, injuries, or tissue inflammation can all lead to scarring. With cosmetic procedures on the rise, scars are becoming increasingly common. Scar treatments used to be a cosmetic concern reserved for dermatologists and plastic surgeons, but recently, scar care has made the jump from doctor’s offices to day spas and prestige beauty stores.According to Grand View Research, the global scar treatment market was estimated at $2.32 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.5% from 2024 to 2030. This growth is driven by rising concerns about aesthetic appearance, an increase in road accidents and burn injuries, and advancing innovation in formulation development for topical scar care products. Additionally, some experts say that the rise of scar care has been influenced by the body positivity and body neutrality movements."Discussing things that aren’t considered 'pretty'—not just focusing on aspirational beauty and perfection—challenges traditional beauty standards,” says award-winning product developer Tamar Kamen. “There's nothing wrong with scars. It’s all happening at the same time: the shift where embracing imperfection is becoming more ideal than striving for unrealistic perfection. And yes, scars play a huge role in that.
